Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE)
Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) is a hair transplant technique that can be used to correct areas of thinning or baldness. The procedure involves the individual extraction of follicular units (naturally occurring groups of one to four hairs) from the scalp/donor area.
In FUE, a surgeon makes small circular incisions in the donor area and extracts the follicular units one at a time. These are then implanted into the recipient site to achieve the desired result.
Unlike strip harvesting, follicular unit extraction does not leave a visible linear scar behind, allowing patients to wear their hair short and hide any incision lines during recovery.
Before no linear scar FUE was introduced, doctors performed the more traditional method of follicular unit strip surgery, which involved cutting a strip from the back or sides of the scalp and microscopically dividing the strip into individual grafts. This was known as FUSS and was the primary method of hair transplantation until no linear scar FUE was developed.
Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT)
Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT) involves the surgical removal of a strip of scalp tissue from the back of your head and then transplanting the hair follicles into bald or thinning areas. This procedure can be used to restore the hairline, eyebrows, and facial hair for patients with a hereditary condition (like male and female pattern baldness) or age-related thinning or loss of hair.
During follicular unit transplantation, thousands of grafts can be placed in one session. This allows your doctor to safely perform the procedure, and maximize its cosmetic impact.
Flap Surgery
Flap surgery is a surgical technique that takes healthy tissue (skin, fat and sometimes muscle) from one part of the body and moves it to an area where there is lost skin, bone, muscle movement or skeletal support. It is often used in breast reconstruction, but doctors also use flaps to reconstruct nerves and other structures that have been damaged by cancer.
When the blood supply is not restored to a flap, it may die or be damaged by infection. This may cause the hair follicles in the flap to die, as well.
Another possible complication from flap surgery is incorrect directions of hair growth in the balding areas, such as the frontal scalp, which can be very disfiguring and unsightly. The result can be a noticeable line of demarcation and a decreased density in the affected areas.
Flap surgery is an outdated method of reversing the signs of hairline recession and is a risky procedure. Some plastic surgeons do offer this treatment, but it is generally considered to be an unnecessary procedure.
Tissue Expanders
Tissue expanders are a way for surgeons to stretch the body’s own tissue to increase the amount of hair that can be used for implant and treatment.
